Los Angeles will receive $4.4 million in federal housing grants early next year to help the homeless, elderly and disabled and those with AIDS, city officials announced Thursday.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is expected to commit the funds within a month, said Steve Renahan, a city housing director.

About $3.7 million will subsidize the rents of 71 units in downtown Los Angeles, including those at the Rivers Hotel on skid row and a Normandie Avenue apartment building.

The remaining $741,000 will renew the Section 8 subsidies for 131 households in Hollywood, Venice, Pacoima and Los Angeles that were scheduled to lose their federal assistance in 2001.

“The need was huge,” Renahan said. “On any given night, there are at least 85,000 homeless on the streets.”

The money will help nonprofits such as A Community of Friends and the Single Room Occupancy Corp., which owns several hotels on skid row, rehabilitate buildings for needy families, Renahan said.

The grant money for the city is part of the $1-billion package announced by President Clinton on Dec. 23.

Two months ago, the Los Angeles City Housing Authority received about $17 million to subsidize rents for 2,107 units.
