Psion, Motorola to Team Up
Psion, Europe’s leading hand-held computer maker, said it has teamed up with Motorola Inc. to develop wireless devices that will allow users to connect to the Internet. Motorola, a leading maker of cellular phones, and Psion are designing the devices to work with cellular networks in Europe, North America and Asia. They aim to have products ready in the first half of 2001.
The companies said it was a nonexclusive agreement. No financial details were disclosed. Their jointly developed products will share a Symbian technology format and carry the logos of both companies. Symbian--a joint venture involving Psion, Motorola, Sweden’s LM Ericsson Telephone Co., Finland’s Nokia Corp. and Japan’s Matsushita Electrical Industrial Co.--is being developed to build products around Psion’s EPOC operating system for the next generation of “smart” cell phones and hand-held computers.
