Having lost its share of close games this season, Poly all but insured its first Sunset Six League victory last week with a first-quarter outburst.

The Parrots (6-14) outscored Verdugo Hills, 24-1, in the first quarter and held on to upset the Dons, 58-50.

“We came out very aggressive,” Katz said. “Every time the ball went inside, we got steal after steal.”

Big numbers . . . small success?

Here’s a trend this season: area City players with high scoring averages are playing for struggling teams.

The combined league record of the five teams that feature the region’s top five City scorers is 8-22.

Only Maike Hernandez of San Fernando, who leads City players with a 24.3 average, plays on a team that is .500 in league play. The Tigers are 3-3 in the Valley Mission League.
