From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The House Ways and Means Committee approved a $180-billion Republican tax bill that would end the so-called marriage penalty in a way Democrats said was too costly. The committee voted, 23 to 13, along party lines to back the bill that would double the standard deduction for married couples and expand the income bracket for couples that would be subject to the lowest tax rate of 15%. It would also expand the earned-income tax credit for low-income married couples.
