Construction to Begin on Gym

Share

After two decades of struggle and setbacks, residents of El Rio, Nyeland Acres and Strickland Acres will finally have their own community gymnasium.

Supervisor John K. Flynn and members of the Rio School District Board of Trustees have awarded a contract for $2.2 million to Viola Construction of Oxnard.

“The very first promise I made in 1991 was to build a gymnasium,” Flynn said. “It took this long to do it. I feel great about where we are.”

The 28,000-square-foot facility, to be located at Rio del Valle Junior High on Rose Avenue, will have an indoor gymnasium, a health clinic tovaccinate children and a sheriff’s substation.

Flynn said construction should start in the next two months and would be finished the beginning of next year.

“It’s an important project because it will provide recreation for people in El Rio year-round,” Flynn said.
