Allarakha Khan, 81, master of the tabla, or Indian drum, who with Ravi Shankar helped to popularize Indian music around the world. Khan introduced the tabla, a set of small drums played with the palms and fingertips, to audiences across the globe. He made his international debut in 1964 performing with sitar virtuoso Shankar, and the two gave sold-out concerts in India and the United States. Khan also performed with the late Yehudi Menuhin and such Western pop and rock icons as the Beatles and Mick Jagger. Khan suffered a heart attack soon after hearing of the death Wednesday of his youngest daughter, Razia, of a heart ailment. On Thursday at his Bombay home.
