L.A. Tech Group Exec Moves to San Diego

High-tech executives who leave Los Angeles in search of better opportunities usually head to Silicon Valley or Seattle. But Cliff Numark, chief operating officer of the Los Angeles Regional Technology Alliance, will be heading south to become president and chief executive of the San Diego Regional Technology Alliance. San Diego has about 100,000 high-tech workers, compared with roughly 400,000 in the Los Angeles area, but its tech community is close-knit, Numark said. Biotechnology and telecommunications provide the foundation for San Diego’s technology cluster, but the number of “dot-com” firms--such as music site MP3.com and online information service EntryPoint--is growing, he said. Founded in response to deep defense cutbacks, the San Diego Regional Technology Alliance is a nonprofit corporation that fosters the growth of the city’s high-tech industries.
