A 64-year-old man who went hiking in the Angeles National Forest and failed to return home was found barely conscious by a search and rescue crew about 11 p.m. Thursday.

Ed Tridler of La Canada Flintridge was recovering from hypothermia Friday at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.

Tridler’s wife called the Crescenta Valley sheriff’s station about 4 p.m. Thursday, expressing concern that her husband had not returned from a hike by noon as expected. At 4:45, a search crew found his car at Red Box Canyon. Searchers eventually found Tridler at the top of Mt. Lawler.

He was drenched, scratched and so disabled by hypothermia that he had to be carried on a stretcher for two miles, said Sgt. Randy Sulstrom of the sheriff’s station.

A hospital spokeswoman said Friday that Tridler was expected to be released later in the day.
