Support for Prop. 22

Share

Re “Knight Initiative Has Another Agenda,” Commentary, Feb. 14: The thing that gay and lesbian rights supporters never seem to address is the fact that a great majority of those who support Prop. 22 believe in their hearts and souls in God and in his word. It is not about hatred or intolerance or even indifference toward a group of people. God-loving, Bible-reading people of all political ideologies believe that the institution of marriage is a covenant relationship between man and woman, sanctified by God.

Argue if you will that gays and lesbians have the right to live their lives free from persecution on the basis that every human being should be treated with decency. However, do not argue that those who apply the word of God to their lives should suspend all that they believe so that people who obviously do not read the Bible or have a firm grasp on marital vows have the right to desecrate a very religious institution.

Re “Marriage Measure’s Foes Launch TV Ads,” Feb. 17: How ironic that Rob Stutzman, the manager of the campaign for Prop. 22, should criticize opponents of the mean-spirited proposition for negativity and fear-mongering considering the proposition is based on negativity and fear-mongering in the first place.

There has been so much controversy in the press lately about marriages among gay couples. This is ridiculous. These people work, pay taxes and help support this country, and a lot of them have been together longer than so-called straight marriages last. There are many divorces among so-called straights. Who is to judge?

Gay people have a right to be joined in matrimony for many legal reasons: insurance, owning properties, supporting each other and on and on. So wise up. They are not taking over the country, or taking anything from you. All they want is a legal marriage certificate.

No, I am not gay.
