The deadline for long-term guests to vacate the Lincoln Inn Motel is expected to come and go today, with few having moved or found alternative housing.
A Jan. 25 City Council ruling prohibited guests from staying longer than 30 days within a 90-day period. The council passed a similar measure for the Covered Wagon Motel one week later. But many guests at both motels say they have no other housing options.
Some say they can’t afford Orange County’s high rents. Others say they don’t have the start-up funds required to move into an apartment. And those working with the homeless say the county does not have enough shelters or transitional housing.
Those supporting the council’s actions say the long-term guests create unsafe conditions at the motels. But despite the deadlines, the city’s staff say they will not evict guests with nowhere to go. To achieve compliance, staff members and social service organizations are helping guests find housing alternatives, said Anaheim spokesman Bret Colson.
