Poll of Calif. Voters Favors Gore, Bush
A poll released Saturday showed Vice President Al Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush heading for presidential primary victories in delegate-rich California.
A Time/CNN poll of voters in California showed Bush with a 25-percentage-point lead over his main rival, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, among registered Republicans, while Gore was leading former Sen. Bill Bradley, 5 to 1.
The poll, which had a margin of error of about 3 percentage points, showed that in general election face-offs McCain did much better against Gore than Bush did because more Democrats would vote for McCain than Bush in an election with Gore.
If the election were held today, Gore would beat Bush, 54% to 41%, according to the poll of 1,009 likely voters. But a race between Gore and McCain is nearly a dead heat among registered California primary voters: 46% to 47%.
