Pope John Paul II has a new set of wheels to help him get around at the Vatican, a kind of chariot to navigate through the crowds of pilgrims and well-wishers coming to papal ceremonies during the Holy Year.

Two Vatican ushers wheeled John Paul up the nave of St. Peter’s Basilica for his weekly audience on Wednesday. The cart is equipped with railings to help the 79-year-old pope keep his balance, and is elevated so he can be seen by the crowd.

Wednesday’s general audience attracted so many pilgrims that it was held in two parts. After the first session in St. Peter’s, a second was held in Paul VI Auditorium.
