A Holistic Spin on Depression

Share

There are a great many books available on depression, many of which focus on the range of conventional therapies, such as antidepressants and psychotherapy, and others that focus on a single “wonder” drug or herb.

This book, although looking exclusively at alternative remedies for depression, describes a broad range of solutions to depression suggested by leaders in the field of mind-and-body medicine. These approaches include herbs, homeopathy, breath work and bodywork, nutrition and lifestyle changes.

Although not a critical look at these methods--which, in some cases, lack scientific support--the book is a useful tool for evaluation of some of the more natural ways to approach depression, including a wonderful chapter on what depression means and how individuals can learn from the experience. Rather than rush to use prescription medications, many doctors advise that patients first try exercise and lifestyle changes.
