Fund-Raiser Set for Leukemia Patient

Share

A dance fund-raiser for leukemia patient Kevin Treadway, 20, of Simi Valley, will take place Saturday at the Boys & Girls Club.

Last month, Treadway underwent a bone-marrow transplant, a procedure that could cost as much as $300,000.

The Treadway family secured about $200,000 from Medicare, but has to come up with the remaining $100,000. For months, family and friends have been raising money with donation cans, letter drives and events at restaurants. They also have taken advantage of company policies that match money raised by employees.

Treadway’s father, Bill, said he got his Camarillo-based company to donate $25,000 after its employees raised the same amount. That $50,000, plus an additional $20,000, leaves Treadway about $30,000 short of what he needs.

Doctors diagnosed Kevin Treadway with chronic myelogeneous leukemia last May. Since the transplant last month, he remains at UCLA Medical Center, suffering from chronic fevers and no appetite, his father said.

But Kevin’s body has yet to reject the new bone marrow and the prognosis remains good, Bill Treadway said. One hundred tickets have already been sold, said Glenn Voorhees, a family friend organizing the event. Organizers hope to sell an additional 100 tickets.

The dance will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Boys & Girls Club, 2850 Lemon Drive. There will be a band, and food and beverages donated by businesses.

Tickets cost $20 in advance and $10 for former Santa Susana baseball players. Everyone is invited. For tickets, call 526-1545. Anyone who cannot attend the dance, but would like to make a donation may send a check to P.O. Box 23, 10224 Mason Ave., Chatsworth.
