Race Relations Require Open Conversation

Share

Re: Sandy Banks’ column “Mixed Messages” on Jan. 17, before I saw Sandy’s column I read the banners and thought they were brilliant. Then I discovered that the one that really hit home with me--”They Were White Suburban Kids Shooting, Not Black” (because that was also my first thought after the Columbine shooting)--has been banned by our mayor. How short-sighted! What is the point of having workshops in race relations if not to be open and honest in sharing our feelings? It is only when people can, and are willing to, be open and honest that progress can be made. Nothing should be “too controversial” for discussion.
