‘Bread of Life’ Dinner at All Saints

* All Saints Episcopal Church of Oxnard will have a week of activities beginning with a “Bread of Life” dinner in parish hall at 5:30 p.m. today. On Sunday, it will have worship services at 8 and 11 a.m. and a 9:30 a.m. Spanish worship service. Christian education classes on Sunday include a 9:30 a.m. adult lectionary Bible study led by the Rev. Warren V. Porter and a 10:30 a.m. Christian education for children led by Sunday School Supt. Cindy Morales. A Christian spirituality meeting will be held in parish hall at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. On Wednesday, there will be a Bible study class at 1:30 p.m. and a Holy Eucharist service in Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel at 6 p.m. Choir rehearsal will be in Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Church to Hold Arts Festival

* Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Thousand Oaks invites the public to its music and arts festival today. The free festival is an evening of fellowship for the family. Displays and food tasting begin at 5:30 p.m. with entertainment at 7 p.m.

Improvisation Evening Planned

* Congregation B’nai Emet’s Men’s Club in Simi Valley will sponsor an evening of improvisation and sketch comedy called “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Temple,” performed by the group Tangent from 7 to 10 p.m. today at the temple.

Tickets are $15 with reservations and $17.50 at the door. Refreshments will be served. Proceeds will go toward the temple’s building fund.

Class to Examine Christian Living

* First Presbyterian Church of Oxnard will hold a worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday. Pastor James K. Bain Jr. will deliver the sermon “Who Calls Your Plays?” based on Mark 1:21-28.

There will be Sunday School for youths during the worship service, and Adult Sunday School will be at 9 a.m.

“A Life Worth Living!” course offering insights on living the Christian life begins at 7 p.m. Feb. 7.

Sermon on ‘Doing a New Thing’

* St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Oxnard will hear from the Rev. Alan P. Gorsline on “Doing a New Thing” during worship celebration at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. His sermon will be based on Mark 1:27. Children will attend part of the worship services before going to their classrooms.

The Japanese Ministry’s services will begin at 2 p.m.

Sermons on ‘Faith Talk’ Continue

* The United Methodist Church in Simi Valley will hold services at 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday.

The Rev. Brandon Cho will continue a sermon series titled “Faith Talk,” based on Mark 1:21-28. Communion will be celebrated at 8 a.m., and child care is provided at both services for infants and preschoolers.

Sunday School for all ages begins at 9 a.m., and a Spanish service is at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Clergyman to Discuss Oppression

* The Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura will host the Rev. Keith Kron, director of Unitarian Universalist Office of Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Concerns, who will speak on “How Do We Heal a World Filled With Oppression and Evil?”

Artist to Offer Workshop

* Liturgical artist Nancy Chinn will present a free introductory workshop on her philosophy, work and creative process in the design of sacred space from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic Church in Westlake Village.

Chinn will demonstrate how, by using the scriptures as inspiration, art can be designed to enhance worship.

Church Plans Super Bowl Party

* The public is invited to a free Super Bowl bash Sunday at Ojai Valley Community Church. Pregame festivities will begin at 2 p.m. at the youth center and will include basketball, table games and video games. Food and drinks will be provided.

The game will be watched on two large screens.

There will also be a free pottery demonstration at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 5 and 9:30 a.m. Feb. 6.

Michael and Pam Rozell will present their blend of music and art.

The stage will be transformed into a potter’s house as Rozell, a master potter, creates a piece of pottery while speaking about his life. Pam Rozell will provide music.

‘Love’s Spectrum’ to Be Topic

* Unity Center Church will meet at the Old Meadows Park community room in Thousand Oaks at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Irma Oestmann will speak on “Love’s Spectrum,” with soloist Jeremy Cowin and pianist Richard Jones providing music.

Birthday Celebration at Mass

Instruction on Talmud, Hebrew

* Rabbi Shimon Paskow will teach a course in the Talmud and beginning Hebrew at Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks beginning Monday. The traditional evening Maarly service will be held at 7:30, followed at 8 by the course in the Talmud.

Paskow will analyze some of the passages from the Mishna and the Babylonian Gemara, known as the Babylonian Talmud.

At 8:45 p.m., Paskow will teach beginning Hebrew. No prior knowledge is required. This course will enable people to follow the Hebrew of the synagogue service and some words in modern conversational Hebrew.

The classes will continue Mondays for about six weeks. They are open to everyone. There is no charge and membership is not required. Paskow will provide the text.

On Friday, Judge Bruce Einhorn will speak on “What’s Happening in Immigration” during a Sabbath Eve service at 8:15 p.m.

The service will be conducted by Paskow, and Cantor Jeff Cohen will chant the traditional Kabbalat Shabbat liturgy. After the service, everyone is welcome to the Oneg Shabbat reception in the social hall, where Einhorn will socialize and answer questions.

Einhorn is a U. S. immigration judge in Los Angeles and an Agoura Hills resident. From October 1979 until June 1990, he served as a prosecuting attorney with the U. S. Justice Department, specializing in the identification, denaturalization and deportation of Nazi war criminals who lived illegally in the United States.

Program for Inactive Catholics

* Catholics who are inactive or nonpracticing and are seeking ways to return to the practice of their faith are invited to attend the 10-week Landings Program in St. Peter Claver Parish in Simi Valley beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Modern Presentations Offered

* In celebration of the Great Jubilee of 2000, a new ministry is being offered at Our Lady of Assumption in Ventura. Linda Montaya, marriage and family therapist intern, will provide a monthly presentation and discussion on such issues as spirituality, marriage, communication, family building, single parenting, the sandwich generation and aging.

The sessions will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month in Hurley Hall.

Congregation Hosts Tot Shabbat

* Congregation B’nai Emet of Simi Valley will have a special Sabbath program for families with young children at 7 p.m. Friday during a tot Shabbat in which the children sing traditional prayers, see the Torah scroll, hear a story and then are served dessert.

There is no charge for the service. Congregation B’nai Emet sponsors a tot Shabbat on the first Friday of each month.

Weekend Getaway for Women

* Chabad of the Conejo will host its women’s Shabbaton Friday to Feb. 6 at the Ventura Beach Hotel in Ventura.

A Shabbaton is a weekend getaway where the sanctity and beauty of the Sabbath are upheld in an atmosphere of learning and friendship. There will be meals, singing, prayer and storytelling.

Topics to be discussed include “Jewish Women Through the Millennia--From Tents to Townhomes” and “Radiating Femininity.”

Day of Worship, Games for Kids

* More than 1,000 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from the Conejo Valley and Simi Valley are expected to converge on Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village on Feb. 5 for a day of worship, music, discussion and games during “Take a Stand for Christ 2000.”

The event is a cooperative effort among area churches. Speakers include Francis Chan, senior pastor at Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, and Tim Smith, pastor of Family Life at Calvary Community Church.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes breakfast and lunch.

The cost is $12 per person in advance and $15 at the door.
