Mom and Daughter Share Search for Truth

M.H. Berg’s article, “A Mother and Child Look for God” (Jan. 19) reminded me of when my own daughter was young. Though she had always known what I thought about religion, I didn’t tell her I was going to Atheist United meetings, thinking that the word “atheist” might prove a social burden for a child.

When she learned where I had been, she asked excitedly, “You mean we’re atheists?” Before I could tell her she didn’t have to use the word, she was exclaiming that she was so tired of being “nothing.” Now an adult, she continues to be proud of her atheism.

Ms. Berg hopes her daughter will lead her to God. I urge her, instead, to take the adult leadership role in a search for truth. Both she and her daughter will profit by honest inquiry.
