* An $18.50-a-share tender offer by Castle & Cooke Chief Executive David Murdock to take the company private expires Thursday. But some investor has been buying shares of Los Angeles-based real estate developer at prices above the $19.25 a share that Murdock has agreed to pay. The company owns 98% of the Hawaiian island of Lanai and other prime real estate.

* Safeway Inc. is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings Wednesday. Wall Street predicts the Pleasanton-based supermarket chain’s earnings-per-share results will rise to 53 cents from 46 cents in the year-ago quarter.

* Finance ministers from the Group of Eight industrialized countries will meet Saturday in Fukuoka, Japan, ahead of the G-8 summit in Okinawa on July 21-23.
