Supreme Court’s Abortion Ruling

Share

* I am very confused with regard to the Supreme Court decision lifting the ban on partial-birth abortions (“High Court Strikes Down ‘Partial-Birth’ Abortion Ban,” June 29). All people have a natural right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. So the question is when do we become a person. Some say at conception, which is true, but it is understandably difficult to accept that a single cell can be considered a human being. Even as the fetus develops it is difficult to make a judgment. But most will agree once a baby is out of the mother’s womb the baby has a right to life regardless of health or age.

But as long as the baby is at least partially in the womb, the baby apparently does not have this right. Why? I ask. Abortion is one thing but partial-birth abortion is one of the most puzzling justifications for sin that I have come across in my life.

I am very disgusted with the extent that the leaders of our country will go to, to let us waste our lives as slaves to our passion. With all due respect to higher authority, may God have mercy on their souls.

This is an exceptional decision. In most other cases I have never understood why legislatures, courts and religious organizations, all dominated by cranky old men, are so inclined to restrict women’s reproductive rights. If men bore children, my bet is that all those powerful and controlling men would fall all over themselves making sure that the reproductive rights of men were guaranteed.

The answer to abortion is very simple. If we do not wish to allow abortion, we must be willing to care for the child properly for as long as care is needed.

When I say properly that is exactly what I mean. Provide the child with the care we would expect from good parents. Do not leave that child to be brought up by charitable organizations. He or she deserves the best because we insisted that he or she be born. In other words, “abort or support.”
