Supreme Court Scout Ruling

Share

* I am in complete agreement with the Supreme Court’s decision that allowing the Boy Scouts to control who joins their organization upholds the 1st Amendment right to freedom of association (June 29). That being said, perhaps the best thing the Boy Scouts can do for themselves and for society at large is to voluntarily abstain from exercising that right in this case.

After more than 75 happy years of association with the Boy Scout movement I congratulate the Supreme Court for reaffirming that the Boy Scouts of America, a private association of like-minded persons, has the 1st Amendment right to determine who shall be its leaders. Millions of Scouts, their families and their chosen leaders will now, without distraction, continue to espouse their values, promote good character and build participating citizenship. Thank you, Honorable Justices.

Congratulations to the morons on the Supreme Court for their brilliant decision to legalize discrimination. Now, all private (or so-called private) groups have been given a green light to ban anyone whom they dislike or disagree with. Women and minorities will be the chief losers with this completely asinine ruling.

On the other hand, maybe now racist and discriminatory groups such as the Scouts will be banned from publicly supported buildings. This stupid, homophobic, racist and misogynistic ruling will be felt far beyond gays in the Scouts. It will affect every sector of society. I am appalled as a gay man that this Republican-led pack of jackals has again chosen to keep as many institutions all white, heterosexual and male as possible.
