Lott Deal
* Buried low on an inside page was an interesting item about a secret deal involving Republican Majority Leader Trent Lott and Republican Sen. Michael D. Crapo of Idaho (“Lott’s Secret Deal Imperils Superfund Law,” July 1). These two pillars of the GOP agreed to exempt the scrap metal industry, doubtless a major contributor to the Republican Party, from $700 million in pollution cleanup costs.
I wish The Times had more prominently placed this story. After all, you could have had the perfect headline: “Republican Leadership--A Lott of Crapo.”
