Normandy Invasion

* Re “Independence Day,” Ventura County letters, July 2.

This letter praising our American patriots of the past was great and I enjoyed reading it. It conveyed my feelings as well.

It mentioned the American sacrifices on the five Normandy beaches (Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword). However, the Americans only landed on Utah and Omaha. The British 50th Infantry Division landed on Gold, the British 3rd Infantry Division landed on Sword, and the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division landed on Juno.

It was both a great and tragic day, but the men who took part in that operation served and represented not only their countries but the entire free world.

I praise the Thousand Oaks man who wrote the letter for not forgetting their tremendous sacrifices.
