Good News, Bag News

It’s not all bad news with bags at United (“Baggage-Handling Woes Persist at United Airlines,” Travel Insider, June 25). A couple of years ago my family did an around-the-world trip with United from Australia. After four long weeks of honey-mustard pretzels, we were on our way from Los Angeles to San Francisco. When we arrived at the airport, the check-in person advised us that there were delays but said she would rebook us on a flight that would get us to San Francisco on time.

Because of our unfamiliarity with departure procedures on Shuttle by United at LAX we missed the new flight and immediately boarded a third SFO-bound flight. I was sure we’d lost our bags. After all, how could United track the fact that we’d changed flights, missed the new plane, then boarded another that we weren’t even listed on? We reached San Francisco and by some miracle our bags flew with us.

It made my day. I guess the only clue to United’s problems with baggage was that they assumed I was complaining when I stopped by the baggage counter to compliment them on a job well done.
