Home-based businesses are becoming a more important part of the economy. According to the National Assn. for the Self-Employed in Washington, there were 10 million to 12 million home businesses last year, up from about 9 million in 1992.

For those interested in flying solo or perhaps starting the next Apple Computer from their garage, the U.S. Small Business Administration will sponsor a one-day workshop. Topics will include marketing on a shoestring budget, strategies for raising money and tax and insurance issues. The event will take place from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Aug. 19 at Santa Ana College, 1530 W. 17th St., Santa Ana. The $45 fee includes a box lunch.

Information: Julie Damon of the SBA at (949) 752-8834.
