‘I Wanted to Teach’

Share

* I wanted to teach. I have read numerous articles concerning the need for teachers and the state’s efforts to recruit them. Therefore, I had great hope of finding a teaching position. Though I do not have a teaching credential, I have a PhD, several enthusiastic letters of recommendation and seven years’ experience teaching French and English at university level. I have even won teaching awards in the past. Yet I can’t find a job teaching.

I contacted the LAUSD. They told me to register for the CBEST, which I took and passed. I have since filled out their lengthy application but have heard nothing. I have also responded to many job listings, sending my resume to over 20 private schools. Not one has responded, even to acknowledge receipt of my application.

I did get responses from a law firm and an Internet company. These calls led to competing job offers, and I start work tomorrow. I understand that schools are underfunded and are overburdened by bureaucracy, but I am saddened that it is so difficult to break through barriers that defy common sense.
