3 Firms Settle Suit Over Eye Blades

Bausch & Lomb Inc., the second-largest contact lens maker, said Monday it has settled its patent-infringement lawsuit against smaller rivals in Orange County over blades used during laser eye surgery.
Visionar Inc. in Aliso Viejo and Med Logics in Laguna Niguel have agreed not to manufacture or sell microkeratome blades that infringe on the patented inventions, Bausch & Lomb said. In exchange, Bausch & Lomb has agreed to drop its lawsuit in federal court in Santa Ana, the company said.
Bausch & Lomb, which is based in Rochester, N.Y., has patents on blades, blade designs and blade holders used with pivoting microkeratomes--surgical devices that let surgeons make precise cuts on the cornea in laser eye surgery, the company said.
Med Logics officials did not return calls for comment. Paul Draper, lawyer for Visionar, declined to comment.
Shares of Bausch & Lomb rose $2.56 to $79.13 Monday on the New York Stock Exchange.
