Stock Market Makes Its Debut

Communist Vietnam took its most symbolic step yet down the capitalist road, opening a stock market. The Ho Chi Minh City Securities Trading Center was the second dramatic boost for battered business confidence in a week, after a landmark trade accord with the United States on July 13. The launch began cautiously, with only the opening ceremony. First trades are not expected for about 10 days. Only four firms initially will be listed.
