An airplane carrying Gov. Frank Keating and six others made a safe landing at an airport Friday night after worries that it had a flat tire.

“The Almighty took care of us,” Keating said.

Keating said the twin engine King Air 350 shook violently just after takeoff from Washington. The pilot determined the plane had a landing gear problem and that it was safer to complete the trip.

Press spokesman Dan Mahoney, who was on the plane, said exhausting the plane’s fuel supply by flying to Oklahoma City reduced the risk of fire if the plane had to crash land.

Firetrucks followed the plane down the runway as it landed.

John Clabes, a spokesman for the FAA, said they initially thought the plane had a flat tire. After the plane landed, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said an inspection determined the wheel bearings might have been the problem.
