Long Beach Wins Water Polo Title

Kyle Kopp and Tony Azevedo each scored three goals Sunday in Long Beach Shore Aquatics’ 8-7 victory over the Olympic Club in the men’s Senior Nationals at the U.S. Water Polo National Aquatic Center in Los Alamitos.

Kopp, formerly of Long Beach State, was named tournament MVP. Drew Netherton, who coached at Marina High last season, scored two goals for Long Beach.

Chris Humbert led the Olympic Club with two goals and Jeremy Laster, formerly of San Clemente High, had one.

In the third-place game, the New York Athletic Club defeated Newport, 9-7. Gavin Arroyo, formerly of Villa Park High, scored the eventual winning goal with 3 minutes 26 seconds left in the game. Seal Beach’s Chi Kredell secured the victory with a goal with 1:05 remaining.

RACQUETBALL

Brian Hawkes of Laguna Hills defeated Mission Viejo’s Greg Freeze to win the National Outdoor Racquetball Championship Sunday at Golden West College.

It was the 27th national title for defending champion Hawkes, 36, who also holds 10 doubles titles.

Costa Mesa’s Kevin Booth and Mike Peters won the open doubles title.
