Sweden’s Jesper Parnevik shot a four-under-par 68 to defeat Sergio Garcia by three strokes to highlight the first round of the SAS Invitational at Stockholm. Parnevik’s victory helped the Nordic All-Stars record a 3-3 tie with the Rest of the World team. In another match, World captain Mark O’Meara, who shot a 74, lost to Sweden’s Robert Karlsson, who had a 69.

Olympics

World-record holder Michael Johnson says he is through with the 200 meters. “There’s nothing for me to gain from it, so no more 200s for me,” Johnson said on the Web site www.NBCOlympics.com. Johnson, who pulled up lame Sunday in his bid to qualify for the Olympic 200 meters, also said, “It’s a huge relief because I was sick of [the 200].” . . . Maurice Greene, who also injured himself in the 200 Sunday, will not compete again for two to three weeks because of a hamstring problem, said his coach, John Smith. . . . Johnson was named to the U.S.’ 4x400-meter relay team, and Greene was named to the 4x100-meter relay team.

Soccer

In the most expensive player deal in soccer history, Portugal’s Luis Figo was sold by Barcelona to Real Madrid for $56 million. The deal for the winger, one of the stars of the recent European Championship, eclipsed the $55 million sale earlier this month of Argentina’s Hernan Crespo to Italian club AC Parma.

A case in which a 15-year-old high school wrestler from Trumbull, Conn., was hogtied and slammed against a wall on several occasions as a form of hazing, has reached a conclusion. A judge ordered three former teammates of the victim to pay $2,500 in medical expenses and each to serve 300 hours of community service. They also must undergo psychiatric evaluations and counseling and apologize to the victim, who was identified as a special education student who suffers from attention deficit disorder and a hyperactivity condition.

Hockey

The Carolina Hurricanes signed all-star defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh to a five-year contract worth more than $25 million. The 27-year-old restricted free agent came to Carolina from Colorado in a trade last month. . . . The Minnesota Wild signed free-agent defenseman J.J. Daigneault, a 15-year NHL veteran who scored seven goals in 53 games with the Phoenix Coyotes last season. . . . The New York Islanders signed Rick DiPietro, the first goalie selected No. 1 in the NHL entry draft, to a three-year contract.

College Basketball

Defending national champion Michigan State gets a new challenge in November--a home game against the Harlem Globetrotters. The Nov. 12 game will be competitive and played under NCAA rules. The Globetrotters are lining up other games against college teams as part of a fall tour. The Globetrotters haven’t lost since Sept. 12, 1995.

Names in the News

Larry Smith, a former USC football coach who is now at Missouri, was treated for a blood clot in his lung at a hospital in Tucson., where he has had a home since coaching at Arizona from 1980 to ’86. Smith, 60, was hospitalized Wednesday and released Monday.

University of Maine hockey Coach Shawn Walsh, 45, who had a cancerous kidney removed this month, will resume treatment at UCLA Medical Center.

Formula One driver Jacques Villeneuve extended his contract with BAR Honda for three years, a deal believed to be worth $37.5 million.
