Relief Effort Targets Homeless Veterans

Share

A three-day relief effort to help veterans break the cycle of homelessness will be held at Ventura College from Friday through Sunday.

Stand Down 2000 will provide homeless veterans with medical treatment, legal services, employment and substance abuse counseling, housing information and lists of veterans benefits and other government services.

A group of volunteer lawyers, along with Ventura County Superior Court Judge John E. Dobroth, will handle misdemeanor warrants and convictions with the help of a computer link to the county’s court system.

During the event, veterans will live on campus in military-style tents and have access to shower facilities.

Veterans from Ventura, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties are eligible to participate and can register in advance at the county’s Employment Development Department or at most social service agencies in the county.

Donations of men’s underwear, white socks, new tennis shoes or bulk food items, such as eggs and meat, are encouraged.

For information on registration or donations, call Claire Hope at 987-3118 or send a fax to 987-0048.
