Quest Software Inc.:

The Irvine company reported a net loss of $4.4 million, or 5 cents a share, for the second quarter, contrasted with profit of $371,000 for the corresponding 1999 period. Revenue more than doubled to $36.7 million from $15.5 million.

The company’s stock fell 15% to close at $50.50 a share, down $8.75 in Nasdaq trading. Company spokesman Don Allen attributed the market reaction mostly to profit-taking. Other companies in its sector also reported disappointing results Wednesday.
