Local Man Trains for AIDS Research Run

Philip Harth has never endured the agony of watching a loved one die of AIDS.

But he will run the Oct. 22 Chicago Marathon to raise money for a cure. The 61-year-old Simi Valley resident has spent months stuffing envelopes for AIDS charities and getting up before dawn to run himself into shape for the race.

Harth decided to get involved after his daughter and son-in-law told him about the National AIDS Marathon Training Program, which helps train aspiring marathoners who want to raise money for AIDS research.

Every Saturday, Harth runs with his training group in Encino. Recently he ran 16 miles.

Jeffrey Brown, who oversees the training programs, expects more than 1,200 runners from the Los Angeles area to go to Chicago in October. This is the second year of such a program in L.A. Brown said 800 people ran in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., in October, raising $2.5 million for AIDS research.
