‘Rocky’s’ Family Ties

Share

I am the daughter of Jay Ward, the managing director of Jay Ward Productions Inc., the executive producer of the theatrical “The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle” but, most important here, the spokeswoman for the entire Ward family. We went to express our extreme unhappiness about Patrick Goldstein’s article “The Misadventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Other Tales from Remake Hell” (July 11).

Goldstein states he doesn’t know whom the movie was made for, that it didn’t have any attitude and that it lacked nostalgic appeal to baby boomers. I take the liberty to speak for Universal Pictures and the Ward family to tell you that we have created a true 2000 version of the 1960s cartoon with the same satiric wit, self-referential self-parody, goofy puns and double entendres that the original cartoon show excelled at.

There was not one person involved in the creative process who was not totally dedicated to maintaining the purity of the original cartoon series, and we believe we succeeded. My father would have loved this movie and would be as offended as all of us were by being referred to as “Remake Hell.”

This movie was made for the same smart kids and parents who have always appreciated the great writing, wonderful voices, silly antics and attitude of Moose and Squirrel.
