Message to ‘Garcia’

Congratulations with a hearty grito on the successful launch of the groundbreaking Nickelodeon series “The Brothers Garcia” (“Meet the Garcia Bunch,” by Dana Calvo, July 23)! Producers Debra Spidell and Jeff Valdez have accomplished the impossible: creating a clever crossover series that appeals to adults and children, in a manner void of stereotypes.

Our family was one of the first Latino families to move into the suburb of Whittier in the mid-1950s. There were no gangs back then; I became an Eagle Scout in three years, played golf for our high school team, attended San Francisco State University and now work in animation. My older brother, who now works for the San Gabriel Valley Unified School District, proudly served during the Vietnam conflict, while my eldest sister raised a family and my youngest sister began working in the travel business. My father retired as a meat cutter after 30 years; my mother stayed home to raise four children.

“The Brothers Garcia” serves as a blessed reminder of how families happily coexist in a world where skin color is never mentioned. This isn’t fantasyland; for me, it was my formative years.
