Targeted Tax Bills

* In his July 24 column, George Skelton chastised most Senate Democrats for “voting in lock step” against bills to eliminate the estate tax and the “marriage penalty.” Senate Democrats did not oppose this tax relief. As a matter of fact, we offered and voted for estate and marriage penalty bills that were fiscally responsible and carefully targeted to those who need and deserve relief.

The U.S. Treasury estimates the Republican tax cuts passed so far will provide the top 1% of taxpayers an average benefit that is 84 times as large as those going to families making the median income. Never have so few gotten so much from so many. And in the end, the national debt will keep escalating if the president doesn’t step in and veto these bills.

It would be tragic to go back to the days of fiscal irresponsibility. We should heed Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and not squander the economic recovery we worked so hard to bring about.
