Would Pajamas Be Appropriate Garb for Maxim Magazine Do?
Bring on the battle of the bashes. Maxim magazine will try to outdo Stuff magazine’s recent party in Chinatown with a themed fete of its own Aug. 10 at the kitschier-than-kitschy Friendly Farmer’s Daughter’s Motor Inn on Fairfax Avenue.
The inn will be transformed into the “Maxim Motel” by party planner Jeffrey Best (the mastermind behind Stuff’s party). Guest rooms will have themes such as Sailor Jerry’s Tattoo Parlor, Bachelor Party, Truth or Dare and Mrs. Robinson’s room.
Best plans to give away “Stolen From the Maxim Motel” bath towels, ashtrays and doormats, and, appropriately enough, the goody bag will be an overnight kit.

Joe Eszterhas’ book “American Rhapsody” could be the latest guilty aural pleasure. Former “Little House on the Prairie” goody-goody Melissa Gilbert plays Monica Lewinsky in the audiotape version of the political smut fest, and funny man Bill Maher lends his voice to special prosecutor Ken Starr and (yes, really) to Bill Clinton’s infamous appendage.

New York-based fashion designer Nicole Miller, who is known for her whimsical silk prints, is dressing up the Republican National Convention this week.
Her red and blue “All Roads Lead to Philadelphia” print, which depicts local sites such as City Hall, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the Liberty Bell, is turning up all over town--on ties and scarves adorning the necks of delegates, and wrapped around the buses that transport them to and from the convention center.
No word on the fashion designer’s party affiliation, but her print is nonpartisan. Not an elephant to be found . . . nor a donkey, for that matter.

Forget politics. The real race to watch this fall pertains to fashion. The nominees have been announced for the 2000 “VH-1/Vogue Fashion Awards” to be presented on Oct. 20 in New York. Nominated for female celebrity style: Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman, Chloe Sevigny and Charlize Theron; for male celebrity style: George Clooney, Russell Crowe, Samuel Jackson, Jude Law and Joaquin Phoenix.
In the music arena, for most fashionable artist, Toni Braxton, Macy Gray, Faith Hill, Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez were nominated, along with Beck, Enrique Iglesias, Jon Bon Jovi, Ricky Martin and Sting.
Since most of these celebs don’t dress themselves, a more fitting category would be best celebrity stylist, but anyway. . . . We the people can play a role in choosing the designer of the year. Nominees are being selected online by visitors to the Vogue.com and VH1.com Web sites. The real-people results should be very interesting. Does the Gap qualify as a designer?
