10,000 Volunteer for Convention

Share

About 10,000 people have signed on as volunteers for next month’s Democratic National Convention--twice as many as organizers had anticipated.

LA Convention 2000, the nonprofit host committee, had promised to find 5,000 volunteers to meet the Democrats’ needs for drivers, guides and airport greeters, among thousands of other roles. But the committee surpassed that figure July 6 after only two months of heavy recruitment.

As the convention approaches, the pace of volunteering has actually sped up. More than 3,000 people signed up in the last week.

“We are going to overwhelm people with hospitality,” said Ben Austin, communications director for the host committee.

Volunteers sign up by providing contact information through the committee Web site.
