Taiwanese Premier to Seek China Talks Based on Respect
Taiwanese Premier Tang Fei is to tell parliament today that the island is willing to hold talks with rival China on the basis of mutual respect.
In an advance copy of his first administrative report to the legislature, Tang said Taiwan is “willing to hold comprehensive dialogue, including political issues.”
Beijing angrily froze semiofficial talks with Taipei in July after then-President Lee Teng-hui redefined bilateral ties as “special state-to-state” relations. Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province that must eventually be reunified with the mainland--by force if necessary.
Beijing has pressed Taiwan’s new administration to embrace its cherished “one China” policy--which says there is only one China, of which Taiwan is a part--so that bilateral talks can resume.
Tang said the Cabinet would review a decades-old ban on direct commercial and transportation links with China.
