Speedboats to Race in Grand Prix

More than 35 high-powered speedboats will converge on the Ventura Harbor today and Sunday for the Teague Custom Marine Ventura Offshore Grand Prix, an annual event that includes live entertainment and food booths.

The race, now in its 12th year, attracts high-tech offshore racing boats from around the country. “You get to see 10,000-pound offshore powerboats flying 40-50 feet in the air as they vie for position around the racecourse,” said race organizer John Grannis.

Organizers are hoping for 8,000 spectators each day, Grannis said.

Today’s event will include race testing only, with racers putting their boats through the paces to make sure they run properly. Testing times are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. The boats will race through the seven-mile course starting at noon Sunday.

The event also includes boat displays, bands, food and prizes.

Festivities begin at 10 a.m. both days. Admission is free.

The forecast calls for low morning clouds and clear afternoon skies. Highs should be in the mid-70s with lows around 58 degrees Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
