PROMISES, PROMISES: The Rev. Bonnie Tarwater will present a program on “Fulfilling the Promise,” describing the program begun by Unitarian-Universalists and being initiated in congregations throughout the country, at 10:45 a.m. Sunday at Sepulveda Unitarian-Universalist Society, 9550 Haskell Ave., North Hills. THE JEWISH DIFFERENCE: Sander L. Gilman will present a lecture, “Freud and the Idea of the Jew: Theories of Jewish Difference,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Sepulveda Pass. Gilman will discuss how Freud and psychoanalysis answered claims of Jewish racial difference. The cost is $8 for adults, $6 for members and $4 for students. PRAYER SUPPORT: A Centering Prayer support group will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Holy Spirit Retreat Center, 4316 Lanai Road, Encino. Centering prayer, a silent meditation method intended to deepen one’s relationship with God, consists of two 20-minute prayer periods separated by a meditative walk. Free. CHABAD SHAVUOT: Chabad will offer several services in honor of Shavuot, the holiday commemorating the Revelation at Mt. Sinai and the giving of the Ten Commandments and the Torah by God to the Jewish nation, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday with a Shavuot service. Starting at 11 p.m. Thursday there will be an all-night learning experience that will prepare individuals for their rededication to the Torah. On Friday there will be a Shavuot service, the Conejo Mt. Sinai Experience, at 10 a.m. and at 5 p.m., featuring the reading of the Ten Commandments. A family pizza party will follow, and children will be treated to Mt. Sinai ice cream cones. There will also be an evening Shavuot service at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday there will be a Shavuot morning service at 10 a.m. and a Yizkor memorial service at 11:30 a.m. All services and programs will be held at Chabad of Agoura Hills, 30345 Canwood St., and at Chabad of Westlake Village, 741-D Lakefield Road. SHAVUOT SERVICES: Shavuot eve services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday and will feature its annual Shavuot children’s service and a religious school awards ceremony at Congregation Beth Knesset Bamidbar, 1611 Ave. J, Lancaster. The congregation will also hold Shavuot and Yizkor services at 10 a.m. and at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The 7:30 p.m. Friday services will honor all its graduating high school seniors. Free.
