Increase in Traffic Mishaps

* Re “Rise in Traffic Mishaps Reflects Lack of Enforcement--and Officers,” Valley Perspective, May 28.

Councilman [Hal] Bernson says, correctly, “Let’s face it, people are just not obeying the laws.” However, his solution-- more traffic enforcement officers--is not the answer.

Citizenship (a word seldom heard or used anymore) is what’s lacking. We are not training our children to be good, law-abiding, respectful citizens. We have forgotten how to be good examples too. Where there is a breakdown in training (parenting), what follows is a breakdown in community, a more often-used word that has been diluted to mean “everybody, all the time” rather than “what we do affects each other, so let’s act accordingly.”

Let’s teach our children (and recall our own distant training) that we are not alone here and have no right to act as though we are.
