A 52-foot fishing trawler sank in stormy seas about 17 miles off the coast, and two of its three crew members drowned, the Coast Guard said Wednesday.

The Coast Guard received a distress call from the Portland, Maine-based Infinity late Tuesday and dispatched an airplane, a helicopter and a high-speed rescue boat, Petty Officer Dean Drake said.

The rescuers faced heavy rain, strong wind and 8- to 12-foot seas. They located the site of the sinking after smelling fuel.
