‘62 Rose Bowl Star Stephens Dead at 59
Sandy Stephens, a former All-America quarterback who led Minnesota to its only Rose Bowl victory, has died. He was 59.
Stephens was found dead at his Bloomington apartment by a relative Tuesday, said Keith Troyer, an investigator for the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office.
Troyer would not comment until an investigation was completed. Minnesota, in a news release, attributed Stephens’ death to a heart attack.
Stephens led Minnesota to an 8-2 record and a national title in 1960.
In the 1962 Rose Bowl, he scored two touchdowns in a 21-3 victory over UCLA, completing seven of 11 passes for 75 yards and rushing for 46 yards.
He was voted player of the game.
