ESL Program for Adults Is Renewed

Share

The adult education program that has helped nearly 1,000 Oxnard residents learn English as a second language has received a vote of confidence from the Oxnard Elementary School District.

With a 4-0 vote last month, the district’s board chose to continue the program for another year. Trustee Ray Gonzales was not at the meeting.

To participate in the free two-hour classes, which meet twice a week, a student must be 18 or older.

Students must also sign pledges to provide English tutoring to a student who attends a California public school. The tutoring can mean helping one’s own children at home or making a commitment to assist in a district classroom.

During the fall 1999 semester, 335 adults enrolled in the district’s ESL program. This spring, 621 adults enrolled.

“The numbers of adults in district ESL classes demonstrate the need for these classes,” said Stephanie Purdy, manager of English-language development for the district. “By offering these classes, the district is providing a service to both parents and the community.”
