The Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Ventura will host a Women’s Health Symposium on June 24 to boost education about a variety of health topics.

The daylong event is a chance for women to gather in a social setting, learn about women’s health issues and follow through on tips for a healthy life, said Marcy Sherbok, the center’s development director.

“We need to learn about ourselves,” she said. “The more we know, the more chances we have to live happier, more productive lives.”

The health fair, held at 3503 Arundell Circle, Suite A, will include representatives from local organizations such as the American Heart Assn., Ventura County Senior Services and the county’s health department.

Health professionals will discuss women’s nutrition, sexually transmitted diseases and ways to seek out emotional support groups.

Dr. Susan Love, director of the Breast Cancer Foundation, will discuss research and ways to fight the disease. Love, a resident of Pacific Palisades, began the National Breast Cancer Coalition in 1991 after she was frustrated with the lack of breast cancer research in this country.
