SAN CLEMENTE
The City Council has approved widening Avenida Pico from Calle de Industrias to the entrance to San Clemente High School.
Avenida Pico near Interstate 5 has had problems with traffic to and from the high school during school hours. The $1.8-million project will add a second right-turn lane on the north side of Avenida Pico east of the freeway and an additional lane on both sides of the street west of the freeway.
The project, which probably will take six months to complete, also will include improvements to the freeway ramps, repaving and an additional right-turn lane on the northbound offramp.
There was some concern that the project would cause more traffic problems. To compensate, the work, set to start in August, will be done between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.
