Foundation Awards 70 Scholarships
The Ventura County Community Foundation, a Camarillo-based group whose aim is to improve the county’s quality of life, has awarded a total of $66,000 in scholarships to 70 area high school and college students.
The foundation awarded the gifts based on academic performance, financial need, special interests and intended college majors, said Gail Brown, the foundation’s scholarship program director. A total of 485 students applied for the awards, which ranged from $250 to $4,000 each.
A committee chose the scholarship winners after screening applicants’ credentials, essays and letters of recommendation.
Brown said she hopes the scholarship recipients will remember to give back to the community in the future.
“We hope, of course, that once these students have their degrees . . . [they] will come back to Ventura County and make it a better place,” she said.
“This is to plant the seed of helping others, for after they have reached their success.”
