Teachers to Suspend Strike Temporarily
Teachers in the Pittsburg Unified School District decided Wednesday to temporarily suspend their 5-day-old strike so they could be present for their students’ last day of school.
The nearly 500 striking members of the Pittsburg Education Assn. were set to head back into the classrooms today.
The union’s president, Marc Sternberger, said the teachers would go back on strike after today if necessary.
Representatives of the school district could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.
Sternberger said the teachers have won the support of parents and community members.
The teachers have been without a contract for two years and have asked the district to give them retroactive raises, a sticking point in the negotiations. District officials have offered a 6.25% raise over two years, and the union wants 8.25%.
