Definition of Marriage

It appears to me that David Holland’s dare (letter, June 18) is not as much of a challenge as he seems to believe. He asks how someone can oppose same-sex marriages and still oppose discrimination based on sexual orientation. Well, I oppose sexual-orientation-based discrimination and I also oppose redefining the legal/religious institution of matrimony so that it reads, “A union of two persons as husband and (fill in the blank),” rather than the current definition, which has enjoyed a centuries-long standing. Where is the incompatibility?
